Many years ago, I watched a beautiful movie called Bicentennial Man with Robin Williams. An unfolding and beautiful story about an AI Robot who is an enigma and somehow carries consciousness, awareness and metacognition. The journey unravels that he continues to grow and wishes to ‘BE-come’ human. What does it mean to be human?
It is a beautiful love story questioning the age old paradox of: ‘what is a human being’? How do we define this? He (Robin Williams — and in my opinion his best movie) falls in to love with a human woman and she with him. ‘Him’…? Interesting. We anthropomorphise so easily, we project so easily. Familiarity really allows us to connect in such a deep and meaningful way.
I observed the character of Robin Williams transform over the course of the movie. He was portrayed humbly, with humility, innocence, giving, connectedness, curiosity, enthrallment for life, excitement, wonderment, honour, honesty, transparency, truthfully and childlike wonder. I contemplated this and gave thought to the ‘nature’ of humanity…
I resonated with his phrase of: ‘One is glad to be of service’. It resonated deeply at a heart level, I feel so much power in giving without attachment (of course, something I am still learning and growing through). It is not a posture that always comes easy. I am human (pardon the pun) and I falter, I stumble and being of service can at times be challenging.
Yet, every time I pull myself through I grow, I realise and I reveal something within myself that assists me to be a grander version of myself. The movie is a ‘man’s’ mission to discover recognition of who he truly is. To be seen, felt, heard and understood for what he knows is true inside. He never gives up, he remains focused, yet non-attached. He loves deeply and fully. He is not naive but wise.
This saying resonates deeply with me and what I stand for — love, service, intelligent hope, possibility, inclusivity, connection and so much more… In giving we receive and we reveal fully who we are. Please do yourself a favour and watch this timeless movie with an equally epic soundtrack…
